Captcha and You

Captcha and You

Who doesn’t love spam? When you go to check your email and there are tens of messages from people you’ve never known and don’t want to know. And if you click on the mail you could easily get a virus or ransomware.

If you have a website, spam clutters your comments and distorts your analytics numbers. Hey look, traffic shot up 40 percent this month. Oh wait, it was all from the same IP address and all the traffic was from spammers.

With bots having the ability to endlessly scroll websites, there is no way to defeat them. But you can make sure then don’t affect your day-to-day operations and digital environment.

The most basic yet effective way to combat the bot army is to add a captcha to your contact form or comment section. Captchas are little programs or systems that look to determine real users from spam bots. You’ve probably seen them when buying tickets or filling out a form along with something to the extent of, “prove you are a human.” Check all the boxes with a storefront or write the letters that appear in the box, are some further examples.

On the mobile side of things, the fight is even harder when it comes to keeping apps protected. Believe it or not, Google has been combating spam for over a decade, as reCAPTCHA is over 10 years old now. The program has been updated recently to help protect you on the mobile front.

“reCAPTCHA is a free service that uses an advanced risk analysis engine to protect your app from spam and other abusive actions. If the service suspects that the user interacting with your app might be a bot instead of a human, it serves a CAPTCHA that a human must solve before your app can continue executing,” as reported on android.com.
